In the three-month period ending in August this year, 13.1 million Brazilians were jobless. The unemployment rate was reported at 12.6% of the economically active population—104.2 million in the time span.

As for the period ending in May, the rate had stood at 13.3%, according to the Brazilians Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). In August 2016, the proportion was observed at 11.8%.

The figures come from the Continuous PNAD (National Household Sample Survey), and were made public today (29) by the IBGE.

The employed population totaled 91.1 million people in the country—up 1.5% (1.4 million) against May and 1% compared to August last year.

The growth in the employed population comes as a result of the increase in the number of informal jobs (over half of the 1.4 million jobs created).
