Teleworking among federal civil servants during the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a total of $270.47 million spared, according to data from the Economy Ministry disclosed Tuesday (Aug. 3). The survey considered the reduction of maintenance costs from March 2020 to June 2021.
Five cost types were analyzed: daily fees, fares and transport, electric energy, water and sewage, and document copies. According to official figures, some 190 thousand federal agents continue to work remotely—32 percent of the total.
Digital public services are found to have contributed to the maintenance telecommuting. As it stands today, the Gov.br web portal offers a total of 4,648 services, of which 3,284 (70.7%) are carried out digitally, with citizens not being required to leave their homes. Another 647 services (13.9%) are partly digital, and require print documents to be sent, or citizens to go to a service unit at some point, and 717 (15.4%) are not digital—they are initiated online and conducted in person.
According to the study, the biggest amount spared was reported for fares and transport—$97.70 million were spared since the beginning of the pandemic. Next come daily fees on travel ($85.81 million), electric energy ($74.88 million), document copies ($10.99 million), and water and sewage services ($1.12 million).
By means of the Management Program (PG), the Economy Ministry plans to make teleworking permanent in some departments, encouraging federal agencies to adopt this mode of work in activities where agents are not required to be physically present. Thus far, nine federal agents have completed the adoption of telecommuting.
