The number of people working through apps grew 25.4 percent between 2022 and 2024, rising from 1.3 million to nearly 1.7 million - an increase of 335,000 workers.

During this period, the share of these workers in the working population - people aged 14 and older who are employed - also increased.

In 2022, app-based workers represented 1.5 percent of the 85.6 million employed, rising to 1.9 percent of the 88.5 million employed in 2024.

The data come from the digital platform work module of the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), released this Friday (Oct. 17) by Brazil’s statistics agency, IBGE.

According to Gustavo Fontes, the analyst responsible for the survey, the increase may be explained by the fact that these workers earn higher incomes and benefit from the flexibility this type of work allows.

“The ability for people to choose their workdays, hours, and location could also be a factor,” he said.

App categories

IBGE considered four of the most popular types of apps, with transportation being the most widely used:

  • Private passenger transportation apps (excluding taxis): 53.1% of workers
  • Food delivery apps: 29.3%
  • General or professional service apps: 17.8%
  • Taxi apps: 13.8%
