One of the questions posed to coach Carlo Ancelotti during his press conference in Miami on Wednesday (Jun. 24), shortly after Brazil’s 3–0 victory over Scotland, was what he would say to the Brazilian fans, who are excited about the rest of the World Cup. The Italian, who usually maintains a serious expression even when giving lighthearted answers, smiled this time.

“Calm down! Stay calm! [laughs],” replied the coach.

This does not mean Ancelotti is unhappy or lacks confidence in the team he has at his disposal. On the contrary, the Brazilian national team coach celebrated the squad’s best performance under his leadership, which secured their place in the World Cup round of 16 and top spot in Group C, all of which is being held in the United States.

“I think the team is solid compared to the first game [a 1–1 draw with Morocco in New Jersey]. Fewer mistakes, more pace, more effectiveness up front. We’re feeling good about it. The goal was to finish first [in the group]. As we say in Brazil, let’s keep our feet on the ground and get ready for the next game,” the Italian said.

“We’re not perfect. We can improve - for example, in our pace with the ball. We can be faster. But I’m happy because the team has improved a lot since the first game. Now it’s a knockout stage. We need to have a strong heart,” he added.

Vini and Rayan on the rise

Usually reserved in his individual assessments, Ancelotti this time offered high praise for Vinícius Júnior.

“I had no doubts about how he would perform at the World Cup. For him, it’s an honor to play for the Brazilian national team, and he’s doing very well. He even scored a header, which is rare for him. I’m not the one who discovered Vini. To me, he’s top-notch, one of the best in the world, obviously,” said the coach.

Another player who impressed the Italian was Rayan. He started the match against Scotland, replacing fellow forward Raphinha, who suffered a right hamstring injury and is unavailable. In the opening minutes of the game, Rayan stole the ball from defender Scott McKenna and set up Vinícius Júnior for the opening goal in Miami.

“[Rayan] did a complete job, both defensively and offensively; he played very well. I’m very happy with the game he played. He’s young, works hard, and has quality. I don’t think anyone knows yet just how good he is or how far he can go,” Ancelotti noted.

Next challenge

Brazil’s next opponent in the World Cup will be determined this Thursday (25), when Group F - which includes the Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, and already-eliminated Tunisia - is decided. The Brazilian national team will face the group’s runner-up in a match on Monday (29) in Houston.

“The three [teams with a chance to advance] have different strengths. The Netherlands are more experienced, but Japan - especially ahead of the World Cup - had some very impressive results in friendlies. And Sweden have great potential up front,” the Italian coach concluded.
