Ayrton Senna officially recognized as Brazil’s national hero
Ayrton Senna has been officially recognized as a National Hero of Brazil. A law signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva provides for the three-time Formula 1 world champion’s name to be added to the Book of National Heroes and Heroines, kept at the Pantheon of the Fatherland in Three Powers Square, in Brasília.
The title of National Hero or Heroine is awarded to individuals who have played a significant role in defending or building the nation. It was established in 1992.
Senna won three Formula 1 world championships (1988, 1990, and 1991) and claimed 41 Grand Prix victories during his career. In 2023, he was also named Patron of Brazilian Sport.
Senna died tragically in a crash on May 1, 1994, at the age of 34, during the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, Italy.
