Criminal leaders kept in solitary confinement in São Paulo state
Upon discovering an escape plan to rescue the leader of one of Brazil's biggest criminal gangs, called PCC, courts have authorized a petition to transfer Marco Willians Herbas Camacho, known as Marcola, and three other leaders of the gang to solitary confinement. They have been moved to a special prison in Presidente Bernardes, a small town in western São Paulo state. The four criminals will be kept in individual cells under a special disciplinary scheme where they are allowed two daily sunbathing hours, and have no contact with other prisoners.
According to the Prison Administration Secretariat, the decision is a 60-day provisional remedy, but the authorities are planning to seek an extension for a 360-day term.
