Court rejects another habeas corpus to Whelan

Whelan is charged with being part of a World Cup ticket touting scheme and is jailed in Rio de Janeiro
Brazil's Superior Court of Justice (STJ) rejected Match director Raymon Whelan's application for habeas corpus on Friday (July 18). Whelan is charged with being part of a World Cup ticket touting scheme and is jailed in Rio de Janeiro.
The STJ said they cannot consider the application before a final decision is reached by the Court of Rio de Janeiro, which has turned down earlier habeas corpus applications.
The UK executive's defense appealed to court so he can await trial at liberty, offering to turn in his passport as a guarantee that he will not escape.
Another ten defendants suspected of being part of the scheme are also jailed since July 10. All of them are charged with criminal conspiracy, ticket scalping, bribery, money laundering, and tax evasion.
Match was FIFA's appointed supplier to sell World Cup hospitality packages. But according to Public Prosecution, the plaintiff, tickets and service packages were sold above face value.
