The Rio de Janeiro police arrested three foreigners suspected of illegally selling tickets for 2014 FIFA World Cup matches. Two US citizens and an Italian woman were taken into custody last Saturday (Jun 28), in possession of 200 tickets for the tournament.
The police arrived at Hotel Merlin in Copacabana following an anonymous report, and found the foreigners with the tickets, which, according to the police, were worth $175 each, but were being sold on the internet for $1,172.
In addition to the tickets, $10 thousand, 750 Australian dollars and 160 euros have been seized.
The court ordered the preventive detention of three people, for scalping (illegally retailing tickets) and criminal conspiracy.
