Switzerland will repatriate $26 million in illegal funds to Brazil maintained by former Petrobras director Paulo Roberto Costa, who was arrested in the course of the Federal Police Operation Car Wash. This is the largest repatriation ever undertaken in Brazil, and when the full amount will be credited back is still unknown.

The funds were freezed by Swiss prosecutors upon finding they came from illegal activities. The repatriation was ordered Wednesday (Nov. 26), following a meeting of Swiss and Brazilian prosecutors in Lausanne.

About $40 million has been frozen under court rulings in Brazil as part of Operation Car Wash over the past week.

Launched last March by the Federal Police, Operation Car Wash has dismantled a criminal organization involved in money laundering in six Brazilian states and the Federal District. Among the main suspects under investigation are former Petrobras director Paulo Roberto Costa, who exposed a kickback scheme in the oil company, and currency dealer Alberto Youssef.
