Mines and Energy Minister Eduardo Braga said on Thursday that the interruption in the Angra 1 Nuclear Power Plant on Thursday (Feb 19) will not affect the country's energy supply. He says that the shortage in the energy production has been compensated for by the Uruguaiana Thermoelectric Plant, in operation since last week.

The shutdown took place in the early hours, and was caused by a flaw in one of the condensers that cool down the steam used for setting the electric power generator in motion.

According to Braga, there are no predictions as to when Angra 1 will be brought back into operation. “There's no threat to security, but [the plant] had to be shutdown, and we're standing by. We'll wait till tomorrow [20] to learn how long it will take to be reactivated,” he said.
