In her first official mission to Brazil, the UN Women Regional Director for the Americas and the Caribbean, Luiza Carvalho, commended Brazil for its progress in protecting the rights of the female population. According to her, the country must continue to advance policies for women. “We can't afford to lose what we've achieved,” she said.

On Monday (June 22), Luiza Carvalho met with the Ministers of the Secretariat for Racial Equality, Nilma Gomes, and of the Secretariat of Policies for Women, Eleonora Menicucci, and asked them to focus initiatives on youth as well. The UN director stressed that partnerships will be enhanced to “continue all existing agreements.”

Talking about the situation of women in the Americas and the Caribbean, Carvalho said several governments have developed policies to increase household incomes and purchasing power, which has had a positive impact on women. “Because these policies were designed to create equality and reduce poverty, women have benefited directly since many of them are living in poverty and inequality, as [is the case with] black and indigenous women.”

The UN director listed areas that need more investment, such as job creation “and improving and fostering women's access to other resources such as credit, land, education... We should work to empower women to achieve special qualifications that also lead to better-paid jobs.”
