Security tightened in Rio favela after drug trafficker's death

Nearly six thousand students stayed home from school on Monday (Aug. 10) in Rio de Janeiro, after the Military Police Special Operations Command occupied the Complexo da Pedreira favela community. The security in the neighborhood has been reinforced since Saturday (8), when Celso Pinheiro Pimenta, alias Playboy, Rio's most wanted drug trafficker, died.
According to the Municipal Secretariat for Education, nine schools, three daycares, and five Children Development Center (EDIs in the original acronym) kept their door closed, canceling classes for 5,759 students.
In a note, the Military Police explains that patrolling has been intensified and that the occupation should continue indefinitely.
The operation, which ended after Playboy's death, started on Saturday in a collaboration with the Civil, Federal, and Military police bodies. The criminal known as the drug lord in Complexo da Pedreira and the leader of a cargo theft ring.
Security Secretary José Mariado Beltrame stated that “thieves mustn't be given any value[…]. What should be appreciated are the operational and intelligence channels of the three police bodies. They've been working together for a year. For me, this is the great outcome,” Beltrame declared.
