Government program facilitates farmers’ access to native plants
To increase the farmers’ access to seeds and the quality of native seedlings, suitable for each region. It is the goal of the National Program for Seeds and Seedlings for Family Farming, recently launched by the Social Development and Fight against Hunger Ministry and the Agrarian Development Ministry. Its purpose is to strengthen the family farmers’ productivity by distributing seeds and seedling of quality, suitable for each region.
The actions aim to support the seeds’ and seedlings’ production, improvement, conservation, multiplication and distribution. The program will benefit family farmers registered at the National Program for Strengthening Family Farming (Pronaf) that meet the requirements established to purchase seeds collected by the Food Acquisition Program (PAA).
According to Social Development and Fight against Hunger Minister Tereza Campello, the action stimulates the supply and organizes the seed production in Brazil. "The seed is the greatest symbol for food and nutrition security," she stated. Agrarian Development Minister Patrus Ananias also pointed out the seeds’ role in stirring up the memory of some communities. "There are 200-year seeds that have passed from generation to generation."
