An illegal dump with about 30,000 old tires was found by authorities in Ernestina, Rio Grande do Sul, on the very day of a national campaign to eradicate Aedes aegypti mosquitoes on Saturday (Feb. 13). Besides the tires, dozens of dumped vehicles and waste were also found at the site, all of which could potentially accumulate standing water where the disease-carrying mosquitoes can lay their eggs.

Samples of larvae were collected from the site and sent out for testing. The operation involved the Environmental Police of Passo Fundo, the local Emergency Management Service, the 6th Regional Health Coordination of the State, and the local government of Ernestina. The lot owner was not found during the operation, and the case will be referred to prosecutors this Monday (Feb. 15).
