A total 73,872 potential dengue cases were reported throughout Brazil in January 3-23. In the same period last year, the number of potential cases was 49,857. The figures, released by the Ministry of Health today (Feb. 12), indicate a 48% increase in dengue infections in the country.
According to the latest epidemiological update, most reported cases occurred in the Southeast region (45,315 cases, or 61.3% of the total), followed by the Central West (10,372 cases—14%), Northeast (7,862 cases—10.6%), South (6,889 cases—9.3%), and North region (3,434 cases—4.6%). A total 5,777 suspected dengue cases were ruled out.
A geographical breakdown of the number of potential dengue cases for every 100,000 population group shows that the Central West and Southeast regions have seen the highest occurrence rates—67.2 and 52.8 cases per 100,000 people respectively, in keeping with the trend in 2015.
The ministry also reported four deaths were confirmed to have been related to dengue fever, a 92% drop from the 50 deaths in the same period last year.
