In 2016, Brazil's government dismissed 500 employees from public jobs for irregularities. This number is the highest reported for one year since the beginning of the survey in 2003. According to data released by the Ministry of Transparency, Oversight, and the Comptroller-General (CGU), 445 effective employees were dismissed in 2016, 65 had their retirement benefits canceled, and 40 were removed from commissioned positions.

In 65% of cases, the reason was corruption, which totaled 343 cases, followed by administrative irregularities, like dereliction of duty, inactivity, or illegal accumulation of positions.

Data do not include employees of state-owned companies, like Caixa Econômica Federal, Correios, Petrobras, among others.

Since 2003, the federal government expelled 6,209 civil servants. Of this total, 5,172 were dismissed, 493 had their retirement benefits canceled, and 544 were removed from commissioned positions.
