Rescue workers are still searching for victims in a maritime accident today (Aug. 24) on All Saints' Bay off the Salvador coast in Bahia state. A ferry boat capsized with about 130 passengers during a crossing between Mar Grande on Itaparica island and Salvador.
Police communications services report military police, fire brigade, ambulance services, and port authority personnel were dispatched to help with search efforts. Private boats assisted with the first rescues.
The Bahia State Public Security Secretariat reported the capsized boat has been rescued, and victim rescue activities are still under way.
At least 23 people have been confirmed dead and 21 people have been rescued alive so far. A three-day mourning period has been declared by the state governor.
