Operation Verde Brasil fights crime against the Amazon rainforest

Operation Verde Brasil (“Brazil green”) has fined sawmills, illegal logging companies, producers and people involved with the burning and deforestation of the Amazon. The operation is said to have helped curb wildfires in September, which was bellow the historic average.

Started in August 24, the crackdown is conducted in partnership with the Military Command of the North, West, and the Amazon, and focuses on environmental crimes in the Amazon region. According to official data, the operation curbed 1,800 fires, seized 18.4 m³ of illegally extracted woods, confiscated over 200 vehicles, and arrested 120 people.

The operation is to continue up to October 24, as per a decree signed by President Jair Bolsonaro.
