Brazilian mining giant Vale may resume its activities in the Alegria mine, part of the Mariana complex, in Minas Gerais state. It had been shut down in March 2019. The company reported Friday (Nov. 1) it received a permit from the National Mining Agency (ANM) suspending the interruption in operations.

The firm mentioned the released capacity of approximately 8 million tons of iron a year (of the original 50 million halted), as reported by the company’s performance report. The move is also expected to bring back dry activities in Alegria.

In order to ensure safety in the operation, Vale estimated the increase in 2019’s produced amount at 1 million, with no impact on the total sales predicted for this year. The surge will be seen in the coming years. “The production will make a piecemeal return,” the company stated.

However, Vale reiterated its own projections—“307 to 332 million tons for 2019, expecting [sales] to continue between the center and the bottom limit of the range.”
