Lagoa Vermelha, in Rio Grande do Sul, is officially, as of today (1st), the National Capital of Barbecue. Bill No. 2,436, of 2019, which confers this title on the municipality, was sanctioned by the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, and published in the Official Gazette of the Union this Wednesday.
Since 2019, the city was already considered the Capital of Rio Grande do Sul do Churrasco, made official by a state law sanctioned by the government of Rio Grande do Sul, in January of that year. The act was an acknowledgment of the pioneer way of expressing themselves in Lagos, through the cooking of roasts, evidenced in the National Barbecue Festival, held every two years, since 1983.
In 2014, this knowledge of the Lagoon in the preparation of roasts resulted in a joint action in the municipality, to promote a university extension course: “The art and the secret in the preparation of the traditional barbecue in Lagoa Vermelha. The best barbecue in Brazil”.
The initiative involved the Alto Uruguai Development Institute, Passo Fundo campus, the Centro de Tradições Gaúchas (CTG) Alexandre Pato (responsible for holding the National Barbecue and Food Campeira Festival) and the Brazilian Association of Breeders of Devon.
Thus, because of the strong link with livestock and favored geographic position, the tradition and peculiarity of the people of Lagos, and because it is a cultural and fundamental element to the region's economy, the barbecue symbolizes part of the city's history.
