Rio de Janeiro this weekend will host a cycling event that will go through tourist attractions and stretches covered by Olympic cyclists in the 2016 Games. L’Étape Rio is endorsed by the traditional Tour de France competition and will include 46- and 102-kilometer races.

Races will not take place until Sunday morning (Jun 26), but promotion activities start today (23) at Marina da Glória, where exhibitions will be displayed with sponsors, official brands, and partners.

At 7 am on Sunday, the competition is slated to start at Marina da Glória and will run along Aterro do Flamengo toward the shore, also passing through the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon beaches.

The route continues toward the Botanical Garden, where it heads up the Tijuca Forest via Vista Chinesa. The participants in the longest race will still need to make the return trip, facing a total altitude variation upwards of one thousand meters. The winners' awards ceremony is scheduled for 1 pm.

The first edition of L’Étape Brasil Santander by Tour de France was held in the city of Cunha, São Paulo, in 2015. Since 2018, the race has been held in Campos do Jordão, also in the same state. Last year it was held in Rio de Janeiro.

The eighth edition of the race in São Paulo will be staged in Campos do Jordão between September 23 and 25.
