Next Sunday, citizens eligible to vote in Brazil will go to the polls to choose representatives of the Poder Executivo [Executive] at the federal and state levels, as well as members of the Câmara dos Deputados [House of Representatives], Senado [Senate], assembleias estaduais [state assemblies] and the Câmara Legislativa do Distrito Federal (DF) [Legislative Chamber of the Federal District].

According to the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE) [the Brazilian Superior Electoral Court]  knowing the order in which the votes will be registered in the electronic ballot box is important to avoid confusion or even the annulment of the vote.

The resolution that provides the general acts for the 2022 elections establishes that the voting must obey the following order: federal deputy; state deputy (or district, in the case of the Federal District); senator; governor; and president of the Republic.

The order, according to the Court, cannot be changed. This means that in order to vote for a presidential candidate, for example, it is necessary to have already voted for all the previous positions.

Bring your list of candidates

The TSE itself suggests that the voter should take a list with the numbers of the candidates chosen already written in the order in which they will be typed into the ballot box.

"The voter should read carefully on the screen of the electronic ballot box the position that is being indicated for voting. This is because if a wrong number is entered - for example, the number of a state deputy in the field for a federal deputy - the ballot box will understand that the person wants to annul the vote.

Voting simulator

The Court has prepared a voting simulator for those who wish to be well trained when registering votes in the ballot box.

The tool is available on the TSE website and can be used as many times as the voter wants. "It serves only to educate the voter and has no ability to register votes," reinforced the Court.

Confirming your choices

In this year's election in Brazil, voters will have extra time to check their vote in the electronic ballot box. According to the TSE, for the first time, the equipment will release the vote confirmation (on the green Confirma button) after 1 second of the complete filling in of the candidate numbers for each position.

"At each of the five vote confirmations, the ballot box will emit a short sound. At the end, after the choice of the candidate for president, the machine will emit the classic sound, but for a longer period," the court said. The purpose of the extra time is to stimulate the checking of the vote and prevent the voter from confirming the vote without being sure that he typed it correctly.
