Brazil and Paraguay today (Aug 1) canceled the minutes on the deal between the two countries on the purchase of electric energy produced at hydroelectric dam Itaipu Binacional. The document was signed by Brazil’s Amassador to Paraguay Carlos Simas Magalhães and by Paraguay’s Ambassador to Brazil Federico González, in Asunción. The measure will make technicians from both governments restart negotiations on the energy produced at the power station.

The request to nullify the minutes was filed by the Paraguayan government after the disclosure of the conditions, which sparked a political crisis in the neighboring countries. After the cancellation was confirmed, Paraguay’s new Chancellor Antonio Rivas Palacios explained that, at first, a meeting on the topic should take place in Brasília, but the Brazilian government agreed to cancel the minutes at a later date.
