The Brazilian government condemned the Israeli drone attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla ships in Greek waters on Wednesday night (Sep. 24). The group of ships, which includes Brazilian crew members, is carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, Palestine, and departed from Spain at the end of August.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Relations classified the attack as unjustified and reiterated that violent acts are unacceptable.

“In reinforcing the peaceful and humanitarian nature of the flotilla, Brazil once again urges the Israeli authorities not to take any action that could endanger the safety of civilians and vessels,” the government declared.

The ministry also said it is in contact with Greek authorities through the Embassy in Athens to follow the investigation of the incident.

The Brazilian mission is composed of thirteen activists, including the president of the Socialism and Freedom Party (PSOL) of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Gabrielle Tolotti.

Escort

The Spanish government announced it would send ships to escort the mission to Gaza and ensure the safety of the crew.

“The Spanish government demands compliance with international law and that the rights of our citizens to sail the Mediterranean in safe conditions be respected,” said Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
