President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will participate in the World Food Forum, an event promoted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in Rome, Italy, on October 13.

Lula was invited to take part in the Forum by FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu in July, when the Brazilian president was informed by telephone that Brazil was no longer on the Hunger Map.

According to Saulo Arantes Ceolin, director of Food Security Projects at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a bilateral meeting between Lula and Dongyu in Rome has already been arranged.

“Other bilateral meetings [during the Forum] were also considered, but everything is still being evaluated by the president’s team,” Ceolin said on Wednesday (Oct. 8) during a press conference detailing Lula’s participation in the FAO event.

Alliance

After the Forum, Lula will attend the meeting of the Council of Champions of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. He will also participate in the inauguration of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty’s executive secretariat office in Rome, before returning to Brazil on the 13th.

The Alliance was established as an initiative of the Brazilian G20 presidency to support and accelerate global efforts to eradicate hunger and poverty.

According to Ceolin, the results are expected to be presented in November, during the UN World Summit on Social Development, when the Alliance will hold its first high-level meeting.

The ministry stated that the Alliance is about to reach 200 members, including countries and organizations such as agencies, programs, universities, and development banks - the main sources of funding for its projects and initiatives.
