Today (Aug 15) is the last day for parties, coalitions, and party federations across Brazil to file a request for the registration of candidates for any of the positions disputed in this year’s elections. The electoral campaign begins on the streets tomorrow (16), with the first round of the vote to be held on October 2.

A second round may take place on October 30, for governor and president. This year, Brazilian electors also vote for the positions of senator as well as federal, state, and district representatives.

Each political party may submit one candidate for president, governor, and senator, along with their respective substitutes. In the case of federal, state, and district representatives, a party may name as many hopefuls as there are seats to be filled, plus one.

For proportional elections—the case with federal, state, and district representatives—the legislation stipulates that 30 percent of bids filed by parties must be women.

The registration must include the name to be shown on the voting machine, a list with the candidate’s assets, a recent photograph in the specifications listed by the electoral authorities, criminal records, and proof of literacy, among other information and documents.

Thus far, for instance, 12 candidacies have been registered for president, with their respective running mates. For governor, 185 hopefuls have requested registration nationwide. For senator, the number of bids reached 192.

For proportional elections, 14,552 bids for state representative, 9,211 for federal representative and 544 for district representative had been registered by 9am Friday (12).

After a registration is submitted, it must be examined by the electoral authorities for compliance. The deadline for all candidacies to be scrutinized ends on September 12, 20 days before the election.
