On Friday (Apr. 11), all justices of the Second Chamber of the Federal Supreme Court voted to uphold the convictions of four individuals involved in the 2013 Kiss nightclub fire in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, which resulted in 242 deaths and over 600 injuries.

The votes were cast by the rapporteur, Dias Toffoli, with Justices Gilmar Mendes, Edson Fachin, Nunes Marques, and André Mendonça joining him.

The five justices of the panel rejected the defendants’ appeals to overturn the Supreme Court’s ruling, which upheld the jury’s convictions and ordered the imprisonment of those involved.

The decision upholds the convictions of former nightclub owners Elissandro Callegaro Spohr, sentenced to 22 years and six months in prison, and Mauro Londero Hoffmann, sentenced to 19 years and six months, as well as Marcelo de Jesus dos Santos, lead singer of the band Gurizada Fandangueira, and music producer Luciano Bonilha, who were each sentenced to 18 years.
