Brazil’s ex-president Bolsonaro denied house arrest by Supreme Court
Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin voted on Thursday (Mar. 5) to keep former President Jair Bolsonaro imprisoned in Papudinha, a prison in the Federal District where he is serving a sentence of 27 years and three months for crimes against democracy.

This resulted in a majority (3–0) to deny the defense’s request for the former president to serve his sentence at home.
In addition to Zanin, Justice Flávio Dino also fully concurred with the opinion of Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who simply reproduced his own decision to deny the request on Monday (2) and to submit it to a vote by the first panel of the Supreme Court. The panel is composed of four justices. Justice Carmén Lúcia has yet to cast her vote.
Adequate care
In his decision, Moraes states that Papudinha offers medical care adequate for Bolsonaro’s health condition.
In addition, the minister said that the attempt to tamper with the electronic ankle bracelet last year is also an obstacle to granting the request.
The cell where Bolsonaro is serving his sentence was originally designed to house offending police officers. The facilities were adapted to receive the former president. The location is known as Papudinha because it is close to the Papuda Penitentiary Complex, Brasilia’s main prison.
