Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes on Thursday (Mar. 12) denied former President Jair Bolsonaro’s request to receive a visit from Darren Beattie, an advisor to the US government, in prison.

In his ruling, the justice states that the visit by President Donald Trump’s advisor has not been reported to Brazilian diplomatic officials and is not included in his official schedule for Brazil.

Earlier on, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira informed Moraes that the visit to Bolsonaro could constitute “undue interference” in Brazil’s internal affairs.

According to Vieira, the US Embassy in Brazil told the Brazilian government that Darren Beattie was coming to Brazil to attend the Brazil–US Critical Minerals Forum, to be held in São Paulo next Wednesday (18).

The foreign minister added that the US delegation did not mention any visits outside the aide’s official schedule.

Earlier this week, Bolsonaro’s defense team requested that the visit take place next Monday (16) morning or Tuesday (17) – dates on which the advisor will be on an official visit to Brazil. A request was also made for a translator to be allowed into the prison.

Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison in the criminal case involving a coup plot and is serving his sentence at Brasília’s Papuda Prison Complex in Brasília.
