COP30 holds final preparatory event
Acting Brazilian President Geraldo Alckmin will participate this Monday (Oct. 13) in Brasília in the opening of the Pre-COP, the ministerial preparatory meeting for the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30). This is the final meeting of negotiators before COP30, which will take place next month in Belém, in the state of Pará.

The Pre-COP will bring together delegates and observers from countries that are signatories to the United Nations climate change treaty. It provides a space for technical and political alignment among countries and aims to advance negotiations on the main challenges of the global climate agenda, including climate finance, energy transition, adaptation, and biodiversity preservation.
Brasília is expected to host approximately 500 representatives from 50 countries. The event will span two days, Monday and Tuesday (14–15).
A concern expressed by the COP30 presidency is the submission of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which outline each country’s commitments and targets to combat climate change.
As of last Friday (10), 62 of the 196 signatory countries had submitted their ambitions, but major emitters such as China and India have not yet formalized their plans.
Alckmin is serving as Brazil’s acting president while President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is traveling to Rome, Italy, to participate in events on food security.
