The president-designate of the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago, emphasized the urgent need to adopt an action agenda to address the global climate crisis. “We are almost there, but we still have a lot to do. What has greatly changed my perception of this process is the sense of urgency,” said the ambassador in a speech after being elected by acclamation by the delegates on Monday (Nov. 10) to preside over the conference.

Corrêa do Lago mentioned natural disasters such as the tornado that struck Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, in Paraná state - the hardest-hit city - along with at least 11 others in the central-southern region, leaving six people dead and 750 injured.

According to the ambassador, such disasters highlight the importance of ensuring that the COP leads to concrete actions, bringing together science, education, culture, and multilateralism.

“This, therefore, is a COP of implementation,” he stated. “I hope it will also be remembered as a COP of adaptation - one that advances the integration of climate, the economy, activities, and job creation, and, above all, a COP that listens to science.”
