Lula: COP30 would not be feasible without the Peoples’ Summit
“COP30 would not be feasible without your participation. This is an extraordinary gathering of people who believe that another world is possible and necessary. As I have said in all the international forums I participate in, under every tree in the Amazon there is a woman, a man, a child,” wrote the president in the message read at the closing of the Peoples’ Summit by the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva.

Lula also stated that the fight against climate change requires the mobilization and contribution of all of society, not just governments.
“Your enthusiasm and engagement are fundamental for us to continue this fight. You carry the strength and legitimacy of those who aspire to a better world. Changing our relationship with the planet is an urgent task. In the world we desire, devastation gives way to sustainable development,” he stated.
The president called for the construction of a “world at peace, more supportive, less unequal, and free from poverty, hunger, and the climate crisis.”
Lula criticized climate denialism and said that the participation and criticism of civil society are aligned with scientific knowledge.
“We are in a hurry; we cannot postpone the decisions that have been debated for so many years in negotiations on just transition and adaptation,” he said.
The president made another appeal for the implementation of climate finance and for solutions to overcome dependence on fossil fuels and to contain and reverse deforestation.
“We cannot leave Belém without decisions on these issues! The world leaders who were in Belém saw the reality of the Amazon and understood that the division within humanity makes no sense,” he pointed out.
Agenda
The president also said that he will return to Belém on November 19 for a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, “in a joint action to strengthen climate governance and multilateralism.”
“I will also participate in meetings with various countries, representatives of civil society, indigenous peoples, traditional populations, and governors and mayors,” he noted.
