In a statement made Thursday (Jul 6), President Michel Temer said there has been an attempt to “disharmonize the branches of the state” by authorities who see themselves as “illuminated by a divine spark.”

Even though the Constitution sets forth the harmony between the branches of the government, “what one sees all too often is the attempt to disharmonize [them]. This is a crime in a democracy under the rule of law, and only crosses the minds of those who believe to be illuminated by a divine spark,” Temer said in an address at the Planalto presidential palace.

Temer said that concepts dating back to the French Revolution should prevail—“great concepts with regards to adversary proceeding, the gravity of statements and pronunciations.”

The president spoke during the ceremony for the announcement of an overhaul of the Students Financing Fund—formerly FIES, now redubbed New FIES. Temer praised the program, created in 1999, saying that “it worked,” which is why, he said, it has just been “enhanced.”

G20

On Thursday, the president will travel to Hamburg, Germany, to participate in the G20 meeting, with leaders from the world's 20 biggest economies.

The president's trip is to take place in the same week as the passive corruption charges filed against him by Prosecutor-General Rodrigo Janot are to be brought under deliberation at the lower house.

In his absence, Senate head Eunício Oliveira is to serve as acting president.
