In his first exclusive interview to Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC) news outlets, President Michel Temer said that Operation Car Wash is a sign of the independence and autonomy between the country’s executive, legislative, and judiciary branches.

“Today, [Brazil’s government branches] operate smoothly. There’s no impediment to their work,” he stated, adding that the Constitution must be followed in order for society to remain organized.

The president also talked about the efforts made by prosecutors, who, he said, remain unbiased. “The Prosecution Service is doing its job,” he said. “I mean to say that the institution has not become politically biased,” he added.

Temer went on to say that “the Prosecution Service has its prerogatives because it enjoys operational autonomy—meaning that the legislative, executive, and judiciary branches must not interfere with the internal matters of the Prosecution Service.”
