On his Twitter account Monday (Jan. 29), Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said he is well and expressed gratitude for the prayers and the work received by the team at São Paulo’s Albert Einstein Hospital, where he underwent surgery yesterday.

“These were difficult times—the result of an attempted murder that aimed to destroy not just me, but the hopes of many Brazilians in a better future. I thank God for being alive, and the professionals that took care of me until now and to all of you for the prayers! I’m well,” he tweeted.

Earlier on, his medical report announced he was showing good clinical evolution following the surgery yesterday (18), which lasted six hours and rebuilt his intestinal tract, removing the colostomy bag.

The president was hospitalized at the intensive care unit, and visits are not allowed.

Bolsonaro is not being fed orally, and is receiving pain killers, intravenous rehydration, and measures for preventing venous thrombosis. According to the report, he showed no bleeding, fever, or organ malfunction.

Oral feeding will be resumed gradually after daily assessment.

Bolsonaro used a colostomy bag for four months after he was stabbed during a rally in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais state. Last year, he underwent two other emergency surgeries.
