Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro today (Feb 28) sanctioned the agreement allowing students and professors from Mercosur countries to have their visas issued free of charge when requesting temporary residence in one of the member countries for educational purposes. Benefits also cover students’ or teachers’ dependents.
The agreement was signed in Cordoba, Argentina, in 2006, but was not brought into force internationally until June 2018. The free visa will be granted to those pursuing undergraduate or graduate programs, secondary exchange programs from both government and non-governmental institutions, and teaching or research initiatives.
The members of Mercosur are Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Venezuela is still suspended from the bloc.
