Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will meet with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky in New York on Wednesday (Sep. 20). The meeting was confirmed by the Planalto presidential Palace, and will be the first between the two leaders since President Lula took office.

Brazil, like India and China, is one of the nations that have publicly proclaimed neutrality in the war between Ukraine and Russia. An assembly between Lula and Zelensky had been expected since May this year, when they both attended the G7 Summit in Japan.

On Tuesday (19), President Lula will take part in the opening of the 78th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN). In New York, the Brazilian government makes the first speech of the UN General Assembly, followed by the US president—a tradition that dates back to the organization’s beginnings in the late 1940s.

On the same day as the meeting with Zelensky, President Lula should be received by his US counterpart Joe Biden in an event planned a few weeks ago. The leaders will launch a global initiative to promote decent work.
