Opposition representatives and senators spent the night of Tuesday (Aug. 5) in both houses of Congress to maintain their occupation of the presiding tables, preventing the resumption of legislative work. At 6 am today (6), the lawmakers rotated shifts with those who had spent the night there.

The parliamentarians, mostly from the Liberal Party (PL), are protesting against the house arrest of former President Jair Bolsonaro, decreed Monday (4).

In the view of the parties in the government coalition, the occupation is illegal and represents another iteration of the January 8 riots and a new attack on Brazilian institutions.

Lower house speaker Hugo Motta and Senate President Davi Alcolumbre scheduled meetings of leaders for today (6) to decide what to do about the occupation.

Amnesty

The opposition is demanding that unrestricted amnesty be granted to those convicted of attempting a coup d’état and that the impeachment of Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes also be put on the agenda.

Justice Moraes is the rapporteur for the case against Bolsonaro, who is accused of leading an attempt to annul the 2022 presidential elections by putting pressure on military commanders. The complaint also points to plans to assassinate and arrest public officials. Jair Bolsonaro and the others under investigation deny the accusations.
