On Monday (Mar. 23), Brazil’s Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet submitted an opinion to the Supreme Court in favor of granting former President Jair Bolsonaro humanitarian house arrest on health grounds.

The document will be reviewed by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is presiding over Bolsonaro’s criminal case at the Supreme Court.

Bolsonaro was sentenced by the Supreme Court to 27 years and three months in prison for five crimes committed against democracy. He was found guilty of leading an armed criminal organization that attempted a coup d’état.

At 71, the former president is serving his sentence at Brasília’s Papuda prison complex. On March 13, Bolsonaro fell ill in his cell and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Upon arriving at the hospital, Bolsonaro was admitted to the intensive care unit with sweating, chills, and low oxygen saturation. He was later diagnosed with bilateral bacterial bronchopneumonia, likely caused by aspiration. He remains hospitalized at DF Star Hospital in Brasília.

Following his admission, the defense once again requested house arrest for Bolsonaro, citing above all the risk of the former president’s death from a sudden illness, necessitating constant monitoring of his health condition.

Last Friday (20), Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes called for the Prosecutor-General to issue a statement regarding the new request.
