OAS to send international mission to monitor elections in Brazil
The Organization of American States (OAS) announced that it will send international observers to monitor the progress of the general elections in October. Members of the organization will visit polling places and hold meetings with Brazilian officials during the first and second rounds of the election.
The agreement allowing observers to enter Brazil was signed on Thursday (Aug. 13) by the secretary-general of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), Albert Ramdim, and Brazil’s representative to the organization, Benoni Belli.
Sending representatives from international missions to monitor the Brazilian electoral process is standard practice and takes place within the framework of international cooperation agreements. Brazilian officials are also sent abroad to monitor international elections.
This will be the fifth time the OAS has sent representatives to Brazil. The observation work has been ongoing since the 2018 presidential elections.
In the last presidential election, in 2022, the OAS concluded that the elections took place in an orderly and normal manner.
Missions
In addition to the OAS, the European Union, the Mercosur Parliament (Parlasul), the Inter-American Union of Electoral Organizations (Uniore), the League of Arab States, and the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) have confirmed they will send international observers.
