At the Rio 2016 Olympics closing ceremony, the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, thanked Brazil's role in making the event a success. “We arrived in Brazil as guests. Today we depart as your friends,” he said, completing in Portuguese: “These were marvellous Olympic Games in the marvellous city!”

Bach said the Games had been a celebration of diversity and were going to leave a great legacy for future generations. He thanked the volunteers who worked during the Games and extolled the athletes' performance. “By competing in friendship and respect, by living in harmony under one roof in one Olympic Village, you are sending a powerful message of peace to the whole world,” he said.

The IOC president went on to mention the refugee athletes at the Olympics. “You have inspired us with your talent and human spirit. You are a symbol of hope to the millions of refugees in the world,” he said.

Six representatives of educational and social programs supported by the International Olympic Committee were honored by the IOC, representing Rio's population. One of them was Renato Sorriso, a Brazilian street cleaner who helped introduce Rio to the world at the transition section of the London 2012 Olympics closing ceremony.
