Brazil reports first death from Covid-19

The victim had been hospitalized in São Paulo

Health officials in São Paulo today (Mar. 17) confirmed the country’s first death from the new coronavirus. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, had been hospitalized in São Paulo.

Further details will be provided later today by Governor João Doria, the authorities stated.

Emergency

On Tuesday, the city declared emergency situation owing to the pandemic.

The state government called off public cultural and sports events both outdoors and indoors and advised that private ones also be canceled.

Among the measures to help tackle Covid-19 announced by the government to be effective as of today are that all state civil servants aged over 60 in São Paulo should work from home, except health and security agents.

Until yesterday (16), the state of São Paulo had 152 confirmed cases of Covid-19. Suspected cases totaled 1,777.

Across the country, confirmed cases add up to 234, as per data from the latest report by the Health Ministry, released Monday.
