Brazil reports 800 deaths from coronavirus

In one day, 133 were registered, the highest since monitoring began

The death toll from the new coronavirus reached 800 in Brazil, Wednesday (Apr. 8) figures show. The number is up 20 percent from the day before (667). In 24 hours, 133 deaths were reported—the largest since monitoring began.

Of those, 59 percent were men and 41 percent women, with 77 percent of the total aged 60 or older, compared to last week’s 90 percent.

As for complications associated to death, 336 had heart disease, 240 had diabetes, 82 some lung disease, and 55 had a neurological condition.

Of 27 states across the country, São Paulo has the highest number of people killed by some complication of the disease—428. Next come Rio de Janeiro (106), Pernambuco (46), Ceará (43), and Amazonas (30).

Infected

The number of patients infected with the novel coronavirus went to 15,927, according to the latest official figures, up 16 percent from Tuesday’s (7) 13,717. The mortality rate associated with the disease in the country went up from 4.4 to five percent. New cases stood at 2,210, a new record. Hospitalizations linked to COVID-19 added up to 2,346.

Compared to other countries, Brazil ranks 14th for the amount of confirmed cases, 12th for the number of deaths, 8th for deaths divided by the number of confirmed cases, and 16th for deaths proportionate to the population.
