COVID-19: Brazil has 97,256 deaths, 2.02 mi recovered
A total of 741,180 patients are being monitored

The daily report released Wednesday (Aug. 5) by the Health Ministry shows Brazil has had 2,859,073 cases of COVID-19. Of these, 70.7 percent have recovered from the disease, or 2,020,637 people; 97,256 have passed away, and 741,180 patients are receiving treatment. In the last 24 hours, 1,437 deaths were notified, as well as 57,152 new cases.
The lethality rate (number of deaths divided by the case tally) stood at 3.4 percent, the same percentage as the previous days. Mortality (deaths for every 100 thousand people) reached 46.3. The incidence of COVID-19 cases for every 100 thousand people is 1,360.3.
Brazil is still second on the global ranking for number of both cases and deaths linked to the pandemic. Atop the list stands the US. According to the map put together by the Johns Hopkins University, the country has had 157,690 deaths and 4,811,128 cases. Third for the amount of cases is India, with 1.9 million infections and 39,795 passings. Considering the death toll, the third position is occupied by Mexico, with 48,869 people killed and a case tally of 449 thousand.
COVID-19 across the states
The Brazilian states with the highest number of people killed by COVID-19 are São Paulo (24,109), Rio de Janeiro (13,855), Ceará (7,867), Pernambuco (6,758), and Pará (5,818). Those with the lowest amount of related deaths are Tocantins (415), Mato Grosso do Sul (442), Roraima (532), Acre (547), and Amapá (588). Mato Grosso do Sul—the least lethal place over the course of the pandemic—has now overcome Tocantins and Acre.
São Paulo also ranks first on the list for case count, with 585,265 notifications, followed by Ceará (181,443), Bahia (179,737), Rio de Janeiro (172,679), and Pará (160,695). The states with the least infected patients thus far are Acre (21,033), Tocantins (28,312), Mato Grosso do Sul (28,315), Roraima (34,296), and Amapá (37,318).
