COVID-19: Brazil reports 33,500 new cases, 836 deaths

Of the total 4.59 million contaminated, 85.9% have recovered

Brazil had 836 deaths and 33,536 new cases of the novel coronavirus registered in 24 hours, as per the daily update by the Health Ministry, published Tuesday (Sep. 22).

The total COVID-19 death toll has reached 138.108, up 0.6 percent on Monday’s 137,272. There are also 2,423 deaths under investigation.

With the new diagnoses notified by the state health secretariats, the total case tally adds up to 4,491,604—up 0.7 percent from Monday’s 4,558,068.

Also, 507,869 people were reported to be monitored and another 3,945,627 to have recovered.

São Paulo

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the state of São Paulo has reported 945,422 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, with 34,266 deaths. At least 810,750 people have recovered from the disease, 103,628 of whom after being hospitalized. From Monday to Tuesday, the state reported 8,090 new cases and 282 new deaths from COVID-19.

Even though last week saw an increase in the number of both cases and deaths from COVID-19, the number of patients hospitalized has been on the wane. On Tuesday (22), the state had 9,758 people hospitalized with a suspected or confirmed case of the new coronavirus, 4,195 of them in a serious state. The occupancy rate of bed in intensive care units stands at 47.2 percent in the state and 46.5 percent in the Great São Paulo area.

Other states

The state of Rio de Janeiro tanks second for number of fatal cases (17,798), followed by Ceará (8,850), Pernambuco (8,055), and Minas Gerais (6,764). The states with the least deaths are Roraima (616), Acre (651), Amapá (695), Tocantins (877), and Mato Grosso do Sul (1,191).
