COVID-19: Brazil reports 56.6 thousand cases, 1.1 deaths in 24 hours

It was the second highest number of deaths since September

Brazil confirmed 56,648 new cases of COVID-19 and 1,171 new deaths from the disease in 24 hours. The data can be found in the daily update published by the Ministry of Health Tuesday evening (Jan. 5).

The amount of new deaths was the second highest since early in September, second only to December 30’s 1,194 fatalities as a result of the novel coronavirus.

After the update, the total of lives claimed by the pandemic reached 197,732. There are also 2,550 deaths under investigation.

Brazil’s case tally now stands at 7,810,400, 6,963,407 of them have recovered from the disease, and 649,261 active cases are being monitored.

States

Atop the list of Brazilian states with the highest death tolls are São Paulo (47,222), Rio de Janeiro (25,837), Minas Gerais (12,083), Ceará (10,042), and Pernambuco (9,709). Among those at the bottom are Roraima (798), Acre (808), Amapá (943), Tocantins (1,248), and Rondônia (1,852).
