Pandemic levels may remain critical throughout April: Fiocruz
Restrictive measures have led to spots of “localized success”

The high transmission levels of COVID-19 in Brazil last week indicates that the pandemic figures may remain high throughout this month. The alert was released today (Apr. 16) by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), in the report COVID-19 Observatory.
Researchers argue that the restrictive measures adopted in some states and municipalities have produced spots of “localized success,” which may result in the reduction in severe cases of the disease in the coming weeks.
Nonetheless, making measures flexible at this moment may bring back the elevated transmission pace in a scenario where more strict social distancing is yet to show a significant impact on the number of deaths and on the hospital demand of patients with COVID-19.
The document shows the pandemic may stabilize at a threshold considerably higher than last year, as indicated by the stabilization of the incidence of new cases and the persistence of critical levels in ICU bed occupancy in most of Brazil.
Daily average of deaths and ICU
Last week (April 4–10), Brazil once again surpassed the daily average of 3 thousand deaths and reached the record of 3,123 deaths in the seven-day moving average on April 12, as per Fiocruz data.
The ICU occupancy rate for COVID-19 patients is still above 80 percent across 23 of the 27 Brazilian states. The text also reveals that, up until last week, 30.2 percent of the people vaccinated against COVID-19 had received both doses of the inoculation, whereas 69.8 percent were given just one dose.
Fiocruz mentions that both CoronaVac and Oxford/AstraZeneca require two doses for immunization to be complete. As a result, recommendations include immunization planning, monitoring and an active search for those who failed to receive the second dose—requirements for reaching the intended protection without wasting resources.
