Between January and early December this year, probable cases of chikungunya in Brazil totaled 93,403. The number represents an increase of 31.3% over the same period last year.

The regions with the highest incidence rates of the disease were the Northeast (111.7 per 100 thousand inhabitants), the Southeast (29.1) and the Midwest (6.9). In the period analyzed, 13 deaths were confirmed as a result of the disease, with 24 cases under investigation.

The data are in the epidemiological bulletin of the Ministry of Health on cases of urban arboviruses transmitted by Aedes aegypti , released this Thursday (16), available on the folder's website .

Dengue cases totaled 508.2 thousand in the period, a decrease of 45.7% compared to the same period in 2020. The regions with the highest incidence rates are the Midwest (548.8 per 100 thousand inhabitants), South (218.6) and Southeast (210.9).

Between January and December 2020, 230 deaths due to dengue were registered, 189 of them by laboratory criteria and 41 by clinical-epidemiological criteria. Another 47 deaths are under investigation.

Zika cases also dropped between 2021 and 2020. Between January and December of this year, 6,020 probable cases were reported. The number corresponds to a reduction of 15.4% over the same period last year.

“Given this scenario, the need to implement actions to reduce cases and detailed investigation of deaths is highlighted, to support the monitoring and assistance of severe cases and prevent new deaths”, recommend the authors of the Ministry of Health's epidemiological bulletin.
