An outbreak of covid-19 at the Lar dos Velhinhos asylum in the city of Jales, in the interior of the state of São Paulo, caused the death of three elderly people. The latest victim was a 76-year-old woman who suffered a sudden illness on Saturday (4).
According to the organization, 42 elderly people also contracted the disease, but are asymptomatic. They remain at the institution. Four elderly people were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Santa Casa in the city. The asylum houses 62 people.
The first sign of the outbreak appeared on November 19, when an employee presented symptoms and tested positive. On the same day, the inmates received the third dose of the covid-19 vaccine. In total, seven professionals contracted the disease and have already recovered, but one of them remains in isolation.
In a statement, the asylum informed that "all reasonable measures aimed at the safety of those entrusted to us are being taken to prevent the spread of the virus."
