In his speech, the minister said Brazil has carried out the largest vaccination campaign in its history, with the distribution of more than 476 million doses of vaccine.
Cases have been identified in the states of Amapá and Pará. The new strain, monitored by the WHO, combines genetic features of both Omicron and Delta.
“We’re making strong efforts to deliver the shots for children as soon as possible so that parents can exercise their right to vaccinate their kids”, the minister declared.
Queiroga emphasized the importance of a full vaccination cycle. The new variant has been in Brazil for about two months, and 300,000 daily cases have been reported.
The warning was issued following an incident in the city of Lucena, outside João Pessoa, capital of the state of Paraíba, where some 40 children were mistakenly vaccinated with adult doses.
